lui - tom logan - divorziato, e' un assistente procuratore distrettuale, davanti al quale si stanno aprendo lusinghieri orizzonti professionali e forse politici; lei - laura kelly - una avvocatessa spigliata, efficiente e di successo. spetta al magistrato aprire una inchiesta sulla base di una denuncia a carico di chelsea deardon, una ragazza accusata di tentato furto di quadri, difesa appunto dalla kelly. la bionda chelsea ha alle spalle una adolescenza difficile: essa e' la figlia di un notissimo pittore (il proprietario dei quadri era proprio lui), perito in un furioso incendio nella loro casa ed e' assolutamente decisa a recuperare almeno una parte (una, quella a lei piu' cara soprattutto) delle opere, oggi di grande valore sul mercato, sicuramente in mano a qualcuno. chelsea, a quanto ben presto scopre il tandem logan-kelly, ha ragione: sono stati i soci stessi del padre a rubare i quadri durante l'incendio dolosamente appiccato. preme alla ragazza di rientrare in possesso del quadro di lei bambina, con tanto di dedica del padre. durante l'indagine, tom e laura si imbattono in tipi insospettabili quanto loschi (il direttore di una galleria alla moda, un detective ed altri ancora), finche' si scopre un morto e chelsea (che ne e' stata l'amante), accusata del delitto (che non ha commesso) va sotto processo. solo la grande abilita' di logan riesce a salvarla: dimessosi, infatti, dal suo ufficio di inquirente, egli fa ora l'avvocato, associato a laura certo com'e' dell'innocenza della giovane cliente. poi gli assasini vengono smascherati, il sedicente detective si manifesta per quello che era (e, cioe' uno degli antichi soci del defunto pittore), il quadro con dedica viene recuperato (mentre la galleria va a fuoco) grazie agli sforzi dell'avvocato.
